People, Place & Process: Environmental Portraits for Stylus Architects

I first worked with Stylus Architects back in 2022, and this year the practice commissioned me again — this time to create a series of environmental portraits and documentary images at Green Lodge, a contemporary house in Roehampton designed by the practice. The brief was simple in ambition but rich in scope: capture the people behind Stylus Architects and the way they work, using the very building they’d designed as the backdrop.

Beyond the Corporate Headshot

Rather than falling back on the traditional corporate headshot — plain background, forced smile, stock-photo energy — I wanted to create something that felt authentic to the practice and the project.

Green Lodge gave me the perfect canvas. Its concrete walls, sculptural stairwell and carefully considered natural light became integral parts of each portrait, not just a setting for them.

Six members of the architectural team and four specialist contractors were photographed on location, each portrait shaped by the space around them. The result is a series of images with a strong editorial feel — more magazine feature than staff directory, and far more reflective of who Stylus Architects actually are.

Capturing the Process, Not Just the People

Alongside the portraits, I documented the working process itself: conversations around plans and physical models, the back-and-forth of ideas between architects and contractors, and the quieter moments of concentration that define good design work. These documentary-style images tell a different but equally important story — one of collaboration, craft and problem-solving.

Together, the portraits and process shots build a complete picture of a practice in motion: the individuals, the relationships between them, and the thinking that shapes each project from concept to completion.

A Visual Story of People, Place and Process

The final body of work gives Stylus Architects a flexible, authentic image library for use across their website, marketing materials, social media and press. More than a set of photographs, it’s a visual story — one that highlights the relationship between the architects and the spaces they create, and puts a human face on the work behind every project.
What the Client Said
“Sisi was fantastic to work with. She produced a brilliant set of portraits for the Stylus Architects team and our new website that felt natural, professional and genuinely reflected who we are as a practice. She also captured candid moments of us working, giving us a library of authentic images that perfectly communicate our studio and the way we work. She immediately put everyone at ease, making the whole process enjoyable, and the quality of the final photography exceeded our expectations. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend her to anyone looking for thoughtful, high-quality photography.”

In Summary

The Green Lodge project is a good example of what environmental portrait photography can do for a design-led practice: images that don’t just show who someone is, but where they work and how they think.
